2023 Summit

17th Annual YouthCAN Climate & Sustainability Youth Summit: Do you sea us? : Focusing on both the positive and negative impacts of the internet and, more specifically, social media on cliamte organizing

We highlighted the immense impact of social media on the climate justice movement, through the spread of information, and misinformation, that is far more accessible right now than it ever has been before. Platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and Twitter allow young people to become informed on important issues, but the limited scope of information shared can also perpetuate climate anxiety and grief.

2022 Summit

16th Annual YouthCAN Climate & Sustainability Youth Summit: Intersectionality: Fighting back against disproportionate impacts!

We highlighted the disproportionate impact of climate change on environmental justice communities, indigenous communities, and communities of color through interactive workshops, art, and speakers. Our society is polluting the air, getting rid of green space, and limiting access to food and water justice. Much of the damage is being done by those who are least affected by these issues, including politicians, fossil fuel CEOs and huge corporations. We must not only be aware of these issues but also work as a community, with the voices of those most hurt lifted up, to combat them.

The 2020 Summit was Canceled :(
Every year in May, BLS YouthCAN hosts the Annual Youth Summit on Climate and Sustainability at MIT. This past year, due to the threat of coronavirus, MIT was not gatherings on their campus. With no venue available and the chance of COVID-19 too high, YouthCAN sadly decided not to hold the summit that year.

2019 Summit

13th Annual YouthCAN Climate & Sustainability Youth Summit at MIT: Facing Waste

WORKSHOPS: We highlighted the problems associated with all sorts of waste including food waste, water waste, plastic waste, energy waste, and toxic waste and seeking to address the problem of our disposable mindset. In addition to advocating for legislation to address how we handle waste and overproduction in America, workshops also focused on how we can change our attitudes and habits with regard to consumerism. Our keynote speaker was Dr. Ellis Jones, author of the The Better World Buying Guide. Met more than 250 student attendees from over 50 area schools. Workshop facilitators included, Sunrise Boston, Mass 350 for a Better Future, Daily Table, New England Aquarium, City Compost, Greenovate Boston, The Thirst Project, CREW, and more. The Summit was a fun day of environmental speakers, workshops, exhibits, activities, and performers. Some of the exhibitors included a green band with a bike-powered sound system, Rainforest Reptiles, Round the Bend Farm, Baja Face Painting, Bike-powered smoothies, painting climate mosaic panels with Our Climate, and an environmental photo booth. All attendees received a free water bottle, backpack, and a copy of Dr. Ellis's book. Win prizes in a free raffle. Breakfast and lunch were included.
